There are just 2 ladies judges in the Supreme Court and 78 in different high courts of the nation, the federal government notified Parliament on Wednesday.
In a written reply to a concern in the Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad stated the information of the female judges in the tribunals are not kept centrally as they are administered by various ministries or departments of the federal government.
The information of the female judges in the secondary judiciary are likewise not kept centrally as the topic falls within the domain of the high courts and state federal governments, he included.
” As on September 1, 2020, there are 2 ladies judges in the Supreme Court and 78 ladies judges in different High Courts,” Mr Prasad stated.
He stated the Supreme Court has actually an approved strength of 34 judges and 2 of them are ladies.
According to the information supplied by the minister, the optimum of 11 ladies judges remain in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, followed by 9 in the Madras High Court and 8 each in the high courts of Delhi and Bombay.
The information stated the high courts of Patna, Manipur, Meghalaya, Telangana, Tripura and Uttarakhand do not have any female judge.
There is just a lady judge each in the high courts of Gauhati, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Sikkim.
On whether the federal government is taking actions to increase the representation of ladies in the judiciary and whether booking would be supplied to increase their strength, the minister stated the consultations of high court judges are made under Articles 217 and 224 of the Constitution.
” These Articles do not offer booking for any caste or class of individual consisting of ladies. The Government has, nevertheless, been asking for the Chief Justices of the High Courts that while sending out propositions for visit of Judges, due factor to consider be offered to appropriate prospects coming from Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Minorities, classes and ladies,” he stated.
